Between Pius IV’s choice of Antonio Trevisi as engineer and the sub- sequent disfavor of the next pope, Pius V, Ligorio, much to his outrage, was excluded from participation in completing the aqueduct. It is nevertheless clear that he had made a thorough investigation of its structure and had investigated as well other aqueducts and associated cisterns and castelli of Rome. For him, archaeological investigation and the repair of the aque- ducts were closely related activities, especially because he admired ancient Roman building techniques and believed that they should be reinstated.
