It is important to underline that the analysis in this connection is not a philological endeavour. Instead it seeks to view the structures within the act of reading.“

Comment:
Taking into account that we do not even know when exactly Giovanni Battista da Sangallo worked on his text and illustration, how much of it is the result of discussions with, e.g., Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and others – and how much we know about the abilities of Giovanni Battista – it seems to be a very bold attempt to „the structures within the act of reading!

„In order to set Sangallo’s Vitruvius-studies into a broader context, the second case study turns to the vast Vitruvius-programme presented by the Accademia della Virtù and to the many publications of Vitruvius’s De Architectura mainly in the first half of the 16th century – the time when Sangallo made his notes.“

Comment:
So, the Accademia’s program – presumably the result of intense discussions among some 20-50 persons AND a review of the many (i.e.: all) publications from the first half of the 16th century … this all together is the one ‚other‘ example of reading Vitruvius that will be used as the background to „view the structures within the act of reading“ by Gionvanni Antonio? Really? Seems to be a very bold attempt even only to compare texts. But what is here in focus are the strategies how architects and antiquarians read the text over half a century. Wow!
