NAME(S) Unknown, Italy, 16th century draughtsman TITLE Elevation for an altarpiece frame; verso: Sketch for a frame, probably for an altarpiece DATE(S) 16th century PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION 1 drawing(s) pen and brown ink with brown, grey, and some red wash sheet: 40.7 x 26.4 cm INSCRIPTIONS inscribed and dated - by an unknown hand, in pen and brown ink, t.: "Laquite ... mamio il uio poramento no [?] ..."; b.: "questo barnmento no n intende ... / conto ... opero / ... in fu"; throughout: with dimensions and colour of materials [?]; and verso: "... Lavando for zdd germano 1508 ...[?]" inscribed and numbered - by an unknown hand, in graphite, verso, l.r.: "T [?] 26632 / #5" [in a circle; inventory number ?] NOTES - This elevation is for an altarpiece frame which has a single rectangular panel surmounted by an entablature and sculpted birds within an arched surround. The frame is embellished with consoles and rosettes. Red wash is used, probably to indicate marble panels. The sketch on the verso is probably also for an altarpiece frame. It is composed of a rectangular frame with classical elements characteristic of Italian altarpiece frames. SOURCES - "Italian, 16th century." 'Dealer's Description.' 20 February 1964. NAME(S) Unknown, Italy, late 16th century draughtsman TITLE Elevation for an altarpiece frame with Corinthian columns and a broken pediment DATE(S) late 16th century PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION 1 drawing(s) pen and brown ink and brown wash with purple watercolour over graphite or possibly black chalk sheet: 42.0 x 27.9 cm - The l.l. corner of the sheet is missing and the sheet has been trimmed at the t., cutting off part of the image. INSCRIPTIONS inscribed - in an unknown contemporary hand, in pen and brown ink, throughout: with measurements and building materials and their colours signed - by the collector, in pen and brown ink, c.: "J Talman" inscribed and numbered - by an unknown hand, in graphite, verso, l.r.: "T [?] 26631 / #6" [inventory number ?] NOTES - This elevation is for a rectangular frame for an altarpiece with a marble block, possibly the altar, within an arched surround. The altarpiece is flanked on each side by two Corinthian columns and is surmounted by an entablature with a bas-relief of a cherub, a broken pediment with volutes, and a cross.
